The Hidden Cost of Shipping Outside of NetSuite

|

Every time an order leaves the system of record, someone pays for it. Here’s where, and how to add it up.

NetSuite already knows almost everything about an order before it ships: the items and their dimensions, the customer, the promised date, the retailer’s requirements. Yet in most operations, the shipping work happens somewhere else. Orders are exported or synced to a separate shipping app. Rates are checked on carrier sites. Freight is quoted by phone. ASNs are keyed into a retailer’s portal.

Each of those exits looks small. Added up, they’re one of the largest costs in the operation, and almost nobody has a line item for it.

Where the cost hides

Re-keying. When orders move to a third-party shipping app, whether by spreadsheet or by connector, someone ends up entering carton dimensions and weights by hand. At 45 seconds an order, a team shipping 25,000 packages a month spends about 3,750 hours a year on work NetSuite already has the data to do. Every typo is a potential dimensional-weight charge.

The box. If nobody chooses the carton from the item dimensions, packers guess. The wrong box means more void fill, a more expensive carton, and paying the carrier to ship air.

The carrier. Service gets picked by habit: the same carrier and the same service, every time. Rate-shopping every order across every carrier, and picking the cheapest one that still arrives on time, is conservatively worth about 6% of parcel spend.

Freight. LTL gets quoted by phone or through carrier portals, then someone types up the bill of lading. The quote never touches the order.

Retail compliance. For B2B shippers, this is where the real money leaks. Routing guides, GS1 carton labels, packing lists and the 856 ASN run about three hours of manual work per retail shipment. And a missing or wrong ASN typically draws a $200–$500 chargeback per shipment.

Billing. For 3PLs, it’s storage, handling and labor that never make it onto the invoice because they were tallied in a spreadsheet at month end.

What it adds up to

For an illustrative mid-tier operation shipping 25,000 parcels, 40 LTL loads and 150 retail orders a month, these costs come to about $533,000 a year. Your number will be different. The point is that it’s rarely small, and it’s almost never measured.

Why “inside” matters

When shipping runs on the NetSuite record itself, the carton is chosen from the item dimensions you already maintain. The rate shop sees every carrier on the same fulfillment, with delivery dates. GS1 labels and the ASN are built from what actually shipped. Charges post to the same record. Nothing is re-keyed, because nothing leaves.

That’s what LogiVeo does: outbound execution and 3PL billing, inside NetSuite. And because it’s built inside the suite, it’s NetSuite Next Ready.
